Levitz said that “Legion of Super-Heroes” #6 will introduce Legion Academy in a backup feature illustrated by Phil Jimenez. This group will then move over into “Adventure,” and later get its own series.
“Legion Academy” will feature ties to 21st-century DC, but at present there are no plans for Superman and Batman’s descendants to appear, Levitz said when asked.

What is it about the Legion that you think resonates with fans so strongly, because while they don’t have the largest base, those that consider themselves fans are rabid?

Your guess is as good as mine. I know why the book, at least, the periods of the book that I love, resonates for me. It’s the take on the future itself, a world that isn’t bleak, or dystopian, or grim and dark or full of despair. Instead, it provides an amazing alternative, a world of gleaming hope, of cosmic-level adventure, a world where young people aspire to be heroes in the truest sense of the world. For me, it’s a world I want to live on, a team of characters I want to know, and a team I want to succeed. Plus, the Legion has a really fun, dangerous roster of villains, and I sure hope I get to play with some of them along the way.

Nrama: Is your hope to infuse the Legion mythology with some new faces?

Levitz: Sure. And I think, with any luck, we’ll see them become loved characters in the mythology. The wonderful thing about the Legion is the incredible passion people have for these characters. I think, once you introduce someone into the Legion world, you really don’t know where it’s going to go from there.

Nrama:
Is it my understanding, then, that this “Legion Academy” is the planned focus of Adventure Comics going forward? And if so, does that comic keep its title, or are there different plans for it?

Levitz: It keeps the “Adventure” title and numbering. Obviously, with the new, reduced price, it becomes the whole content of the book. So Legion occupies all of Adventure Comics for, gee, I guess the first time regularly since 1968, which is kind of funky in its wonderful own way.

Nrama:
And the Legion Academy is the ongoing focus, even past this storyline?

Levitz: We’ll see what comes. It might be more Legion Academy, if this picks up steam, and if Phil is excited and wants to stay on.

“Legion Academy” inizierà su “Adventure Comics” #523, in uscita oltreoceano il prossimo febbraio.

Legion of Super-Heroes (vol.VI) annual #1

Legion of Super-Heroes (vol.VI) annual #1

An Eye for an Eye.

In fact, Keith just sent me his first pages, and they look gorgeous. He’s mixing Kirby with his ’90s Legion style and a modern sensibility. […] P.S. You know what’s REALLY weird? This is Paul and Keith’s third “LEGION ANNUAL #1.” They did one in 1982, 1985 and now in 2010. Third time’s the charm, they say!

Nrama: How is it working together again?

Giffen: Oh, we just fell right back into it. We sat down and talked about story points and managed to figure out a threat that the Legion can deal with that has never been done before.

O’Shea: Was writing two monthly books your idea, or did DC editorial suggest one of the books after you had committed to the other?

Levitz: It sort of evolved circumstantially. Originally it was Legion in ADVENTURE, then a solo LEGION, then it was well, might as well keep running them in ADVENTURE too.

O’Shea: As a person who wrote monthly comics in the 1970s and 1980s, how does the pacing of comics compare now to then, if at all?

Levitz: The largest shift—which I’ve far from mastered—is that in the days of my previous work, collected editions were a rarity, and now a near certainty. This means you should simultaneously build stories to work as serial dramas in monthly bites and in their ultimate book format; no mean trick. The other pacing shifts are more subtle, and vary more from writer to writer, so we’ll see how my version goes over.

Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1 è in uscita negli States il prossimo 29 dicembre.

LEGION’s esteemed writer Paul Levitz revives the traditional fan poll to elect the Legion’s leader—just as the Legionnaires themselves vote within the series. But it is the fan’s vote that counts, and not, say, Dawnstar’s (sorry, Dawny). Legion elections energize and empower readers in that they can directly participate in the direction of the series, and who knows, it might pique the interest of folks not yet reading the series. Where else can readers have direct interaction like this?

[…] I’m pretty excited to see what this election brings. So go and vote now! Voting ends November 10, and the victor stands revealed in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #8, hitting stores December 22 (a holiday treat for certain!).

(altro…)

Booster Gold (vol.II) #32

Booster Gold (vol.II) #32

The Gold Exchange: Is there a significance to dropping Booster in the middle of the Great Darkness War?

J.M. DeMatteis: Nothing beyond the fact that Keith has a connection to that old Legion of Super-Heroes story line.

GX: I’m intrigued by the idea that very important moments in LoSH history and the like can be solidified time, kind of retroactively. Is that something that was vetted with DC Editorial or did it just require an in-story explanation as to why Booster couldn’t intervene and save the day?

JMD: To be honest, we kind of made it up as we went along, but I think it worked.

GX: What–no jokes about the Emerald Empress’s preposterous “eye, me, mine” pattern of speech? I kept expecting it and it never came!

JMD: One more balloon on those pages and the letterer’s head would have exploded.

Jeff Lemire, along with artist Pier Gallo, will be launching a SUPERBOY ongoing series later this year, with a special, one-off co-feature debuting in the August issue of ACTION COMICS (#892), which will give fans a primer for the full series.

Newsarama: You mentioned that you’ve always been a DC fan. What kind of stuff first attracted you to the DCU?

Lemire: It was always DC. I remember the first things I used to get were the DC Blue Ribbon Digest that they used to have in supermarkets when I was really young. I loved those. But those were just reprints of old ’60s and ’70s stuff.

Then as I got older, I really got into the Wolfman/Perez Titans run, and the Levitz/Giffen Legion run. Those were my two favorite books. And then, you know, I was the perfect age for Crisis on Infinite Earths, and that was great for me, seeing everyone together and the whole mythology of the different earths and everything. So I got sucked into DC really early. I love that early ’80s and late ’80s era of DC.

DC Comics has joined forces with TASCHEN […] to produce an ultra-comprehensive, extra large book so impressive, even super heroes may have trouble lifting it.

Clocking in at nearly 15 pounds and with over 650 pages (all details are still to be confirmed), 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking features more than 1,500 images — including covers, interiors, original illustrations, photos, film stills and collectibles — using the latest digital reproduction technology to bring you the characters, stories and the creators that brought them to life as they’ve never been seen before.

And the man behind the story, telling the tales? None other than Paul Levitz, former DC Comics Publisher and upcoming LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES and ADVENTURE COMICS writer. Paul’s in-depth essays trace the history of DC Comics, from its pulpy beginnings to the modern era. The book also features massive fold-out timelines and an in-depth appendix that includes bios on artists, writers, editors, publishers and actors […]

Newsarama: Paul, I think what makes the Legion so fun for me as a reader is the combination of dramatic relationships and the futuristic sci-fi stuff. As you look at the series, what elements stand out to you as a writer, and are you going to play up any of those in particular as you begin the series?

Paul Levitz: Well, the thing that the science fiction offers you is to tell your story against a broader canvas. There was a Roger Zelazny character in one of his famous novels, Creatures of Light and Darkness, named the Prince Who Was a Thousand, who was a teleporter who could go to any world he could imagine. And at one point during the book, he muses about whether he really was a teleporter, or whether he was actually creating these worlds as he went there. Because if he could imagine it, he could get there. Had it never existed before?

Science fiction gives you that same kind of opportunity. You can imagine anything remotely plausible and place stories there.

Nrama: We’ve talked before about how you are introducing more than one new character in the first issue. These characters have gotten older, and there does seem to be a lack of diversity, as far as Earth-type ethnicities, so are you gearing the new characters toward age and race diversity?

Levitz: I haven’t played so much with bringing in a younger set of characters immediately. The Legionnaires are still relatively young people with their lives at fairly early and interesting stages. There are a couple of married couples in the group, and a couple of seemingly rather settled relationships, although one will be unsettled immediately.

The diversity is more important to me, in part because we’re living in a different society than we were when I was writing it 20 years ago. And it’s really important to be reflective of all of that. I can’t say that I’ve solved all of it in the first handful of issues, but hopefully it will lead in a set of directions. And I think the Legion as always a bit better on those issues than a lot of other titles.

Nicieza: […] I think now more than ever, consistent contact between Tim and his metahuman friends, even if it’s done solely as cameos in Red Robin, is important. We would all very much like to see a more smoothly coordinated flow between the Red Robin and Teen Titans books. I have just begun discussions with the various editors on how to more effortlessly work the Titans characters between books, including even early talks of a direct crossover story between the titles for a month. I’d like to do the same thing with Superboy’s creative crew over on Adventures once that’s settled down. A three-way crossover would be just as fun at some point too!

“The initial arc is “Earth-Man’s Choice” and deals a lot with the intriguing character developed in Geoff’s ‘Superman and the Legion’ arc, a man who is a hero by his own definition, but with goals that the rest of the Legion finds wrong,” said Levitz. “He goes through some changes, and their view of him is challenged as well. Meanwhile, a world is destroyed, populations rebalanced, and relationships affected. Meanwhile, in ‘Adventure,’ chunks of the Legion’s past are revealed that haven’t been explored before.”

[…] Despite re-building the Legion from the ground up, Levitz is still excited to see the team’s fans’ reactions to the new series, and it’s no wonder considering what’s in store for the coming months. The first story-arc promises a tie-in with the Green Lantern Corps and the destruction of a major planet, and if that wasn’t enough, Levitz will also be taking on storytelling duties in “Adventure Comics” this June (Levitz was previously editor on the original “Adventure Comics” beginning in 1976), which marks the shift of the Legion to the main story slot, exploring the Legion’s past origins as Levitz explores the present in the title proper.

Superman: War of the Supermen #0

Superman: War of the Supermen #0

Didio mentioned that the generational gaps with certain characters can be the DC Universe’s great strength and also a weakness. There was much discussion that some readers are turned off by a certain version of The Flash or The Legion of Superheroes, but stressed that if it’s a good story, it should remind the reader why he or she loved The Legion or The Flash in the first place. The goal is to find one strong interpretation and build the fan base around that. It alienates some people, but that’s not at all the goal. Palmiotti added that he embraces how some creators can take one version and rework it into something fresh and cool.

Adventure Comics will feature a “Secret Origin” story of the Legion, and they will also have their own title back soon. Although it’s in no way Superman related, Batwoman will finally receive her own title as well.

Thanks to the popularity of the Lantern Rings as promotional items, there will be a Legion of Superheroes ring available soon, as well as a Flash ring. I asked if there would be a “Supermen of America” ring like the limited edition ones from the 1940’s and someone asked about an Alan Scott/Green Lantern ring, but the answer to both was “no.”

The heroic Mon-El will vanish from current-day continuity after Adventure Comics No. 11, due in May. Scripting legend Paul Levitz will take over the character for the new “Legion of Super-Heroes,” set in the 31st century. “We’re basically giving him all of those things he created back,” Robinson said.

Seguono altre, interessanti citazioni dalle parole dello sceneggiatore newyorkese a Io9:

So what is “Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes: Secret Origin”?

It starts from a challenge that Geoff [Johns] gave me, which was that if you want [a new reader] to pick up Legion of Super-Heroes, there’s no book to hand them. […] [The challenge was] can you do something with what you’re doing in Legion that would be a good first Legion book?
I’m trying to do something that will be an introduction to the characters, an introduction to the worlds, an introduction to some of the history in it, without being a version of the old Mayfair Games Sourcebook that I did.

Is this an ongoing series, or a limited run inside Adventure Comics?

I assume success and failure will determine that [laughs], but as far as I know, I have the space as long as I want it.

Since you last wrote Legion, comic storytelling has shifted, especially in mainstream comics. It’s gone to – maybe not a more mature place, but definitely a more mature audience. Is that something that you’re keeping in mind as you return to the book?

When I was writing Legion last time, the idea of writing a five part story was a fairly unusual thing. I think I wrote two of the first three or four of those stories that DC ever published. So you’ve got a change in dynamic there that needs to be addressed. The question is – if I boil it down – “Your audience is older, what does that allow you to do?” Well, I really wrote Legion two different ways in the past. The [1984 relaunch] Baxter book was the first direct market-only version of the Legion and one of the first direct-only books at DC, so we moved to assuming that we were dealing with a more mature audience there. You had a greater level of sexuality, a greater level of diversity and a greater level of violence even. With the death – the first death – of Karate Kid, [his wife] Projectra’s execution of Nemesis Kid was the first time in DC history that we had a superhero deliberately killing a villain. I would hope to continue that process of evolution.

I’m certainly aware that I’m writing for an audience now that is not just older in years, but also older in sophistication. When I look at my kids, they know about how the world works emotionally, socially, sexually, much more than I did at the same age. I think that evolution takes place at all ages now. We’re more plugged in, we’re more aware. Knowledge of science is wider-spread, we’re dealing with a much more sophisticated audience in all those areas, and you’d better be feeding them something interesting. Hopefully I can rise to those challenges.

Long Live the Legion!
