Per colmare il vuoto di novità legionarie, e soprattutto del tempo libero necessario al sottoscritto per divertirsi con qualche articolo di approfondimento, colgo l’occasione per aggiornare il blog con un breve pastone. Le notizie, più o meno recenti, raccolte nelle prossime righe sono tutte accomunate da un generale filo rosso: l’essere dedicate ad autori in qualche modo legati al mythos di Cosmic Boy e soci.
L’onore della pole position spetta a Paul Levitz, attuale scriba di “Legion of Super-Heroes” (vol. VI) e “Adventure Comics” (vol. III).
Lo sceneggiatore del New Jersey è stato nelle ultime settimane protagonista di ben due interviste sul web. La prima, concessa al quotidiano online NJ.com e leggibile a questo link, tocca il ritorno di Levitz alle redini della Legione come autore del “volume six”; purtroppo l’articolo non dice nulla di nuovo ai lettori di questo blog, ma ne cito comunque un piccolo estratto dal finale, riguardo ai “progetti nel cassetto” dell’ex President and Publisher DC:
37 years is a long time to be around superheroes 24 hours a day. Now that you’re free of the day-to-day obligations of running the ship, do you have any plans outside of comics?
Absolutely. Some of them take a little longer to work through. I hope to do some longer form fiction in the course of my writing career. A lot of other forms that I’d like to work in that I haven’t had the chance to play in. I’d like to try lots of the things, like graphic novels, that weren’t possible to do when I was writing comics before, but I figure, two at a time. There are only so many things you can juggle simultaneously.
La seconda conversazione, invece, è una vera e propria chicca che ripercorre le precedenti esperienze levitziane col team futuribile, risalenti al lontano ma indimenticabile periodo a cavallo tra gli anni ’70 e gli ’80.
Il pezzo, da leggere tutto d’un fiato, fu realizzato da Timothy Callahan nel 2007, come documentazione per il saggio pubblicato da quest’ultimo nel volume Teenagers From The Future, e solo ora ha visto la luce su Comic Book Resources come piccolo cadeau da parte dell’autore: merci beaucoup, Tim!
Un’altra interessante intervista di quest’ultimo periodo è quella a Jeff Lemire, sceneggiatore della futura collana dedicata a Superboy/Kon-El – della quale, come ricorderete, si era già trattato in questo articolo.
La serie non dovrebbe avere legami con la Legione, almeno per il momento, ma le speranze di un crossover paiono decisamente buone: nel corso del colloquio con CBR, infatti, Lemire si è lasciato sfuggire una grande passione personale per il franchise futuribile, come evidenziato dal seguente stralcio:
What were some DC titles you just had to pick up as a youngster growing up in southwestern Ontario?
The big two for me were always “Teen Titans” and “Legion of Super-Heroes.” Those were my favorite books growing up – the Wolfman/Perez run on “Teen Titans” and the Paul Levitz/Keith Giffen run on “Legion.” Those were both really great. In the early 1990s, I got more into the Vertigo stuff and I kept reading DC things.
And when you’re talking about that sense of fantastic, the Levitz/Giffen “Legion” run certainly comes to mind.
People complain that there are too many characters in those books, but that’s kind of what’s so cool about them. You just have these dozens and dozens of heroes. Sometimes one would just pop up for a couple of panels, and it would almost be mysterious. “Who is that guy?” And you would want to know more. I like that about DC.
It must be somewhat surreal, then, to be writing the co-feature for “Adventure Comics” with Mr. Levitz writing the “Legion of Super-Heroes” story in the title each month.
I have the entire Paul Levitz “Legion” run. I have all of my issues bound in these hardcover volumes on my bookshelf, so to have my name on any book with him, especially one with Legion in it, is beyond a dream come true. It’s really quite an honor.

- Come è possibile ammirare nella suggestiva foto in basso, il penciler Francis Manapul (“Legion of Super-Heroes”, “Adventure Comics”) ha preso parte alla miniserie TV “Beast Legend”, trasmessa oltreoceano da History Television. Il programma si è occupato di verificare la possibile esistenza di alcuni celebri mostri mitologici; per ulteriori informazioni, rimando a questo link del blog Robot 6.

- Sempre Robot 6 informa che George Pérez, minuzioso artista di “Legion of 3 Worlds”, si è da poco sottoposto a un intervento chirurgico agli occhi. Auguri di una prontissima guarigione, maestro!
- Ultimo ma non certo per importanza, il papà della Legione Otto Binder, che nel corso dell’ultima San Diego Comic-Con ha avuto l’onore di ricevere il Bill Finger Award (fonte: The Beat). Un meritatissimo riconoscimento, se pur postumo, ad una delle menti più prolifiche del fumetto americano della Golden e Silver Age.
